Birkbeck Research Project 2024-2025
A partnership between the Change Management Institute and Birkbeck University of London
The Change Management Institute and Birkbeck University of London are delighted to invite you to participate in this year’s collaboration and research.
We are looking for change professionals with demonstrable, first-hand experience of working in any or all of the following three areas:
- How change professionals influence the development of an organisation culture that supports change.
- How pro-actively seeking out ‘resistance’ leads to more effective change outcomes.
- How organisations sustain employee support and buy-in for technological changes to help ensure their successful adoption.
What would you be expected to do?
Your participation in the research would involve taking part in interviews, questionnaires or focus groups discussions with the students of Birkbeck, University of London.
Whilst interviews themselves would typically take around an hour, there may be a need for you to prepare for the interview, complete a questionnaire beforehand, or fill in a follow-up questionnaire afterwards. In total, however, your participation would not involve more than 2 hours of your time.
All responses will be anonymised, and only the data relevant to the topics will be used towards the research.
What will happen during and after the research?
The student(s) will ask you a series of questions pertaining to the topic they are working on. They will be looking to obtain information stemming from your own practical experience, which is why reflecting on and sharing your own involvement in, and exposure to, discussed situations will be paramount.
Afterwards, the students will collate the data and information gathered through their primary research with change practitioners and compare it with the data gathered through their literature review.
Later in the year, usually in spring and summer months, we share all findings of their research during in-person workshops that you will be invited to participate in.
This will be a great opportunity to have a full picture of the literature synopsis and practice combined. You can then use the findings to enrich your change expertise and apply it in your own organizations.

FAQs
What is the collaboration and research about?
The Change Management Institute has partnered with students studying for an MSc in Management Consultancy and Organisational Change within Birkbeck, University of London to complete a research study that aims to combine theory with practice.
The students of Birkbeck, University of London will be researching topics related to Change Management and delivery, by first carrying out a thorough literature review on the selected topics to establish the known theory. The Change Management Institute then provides the practical element by involving change professionals and practitioners in the research.
By combining carefully curated and rigorously gathered data with practical experience and expertise from practitioners, we provide evidence on the applicability and usefulness of methods, tools, and approaches depending on the change initiative type, audiences, timelines etc.
Birkbeck students are finalizing their literature review, and we invite input from change practitioner members to enrich their research with practical, hands-on insights relating to.
- How can change professionals influence the development of an organisation culture that supports change?
- How can pro-actively seeking out ‘resistance’ lead to more effective change outcomes?
- How can organisations sustain employee support and buy-in for technological changes to help ensure their successful adoption?
How much time will I need to dedicate?
We anticipate that you will spend up to two hours on the activities related to the research with the students.
What will I gain from participating in Birkbeck research?
You’ll contribute to a unique study in our field, combining theory with insights from applied knowledge and skills in delivering change initiatives.
Once the research is concluded, you’ll be invited to in-person workshops to discuss findings and have the opportunity to network with change professionals and Birkbeck faculty. This collaboration offers a chance to shape academic perspectives, exchange expertise, and bring valuable insights back to your organization to create a greater impact.
What are the outputs from the research?
We will work with the students to produce a summary of the findings. The findings will combine the literature research and the inputs from the participating Change Practitioners.
The findings will be discussed during in-person workshops (happening in the spring/summer).
The presentations shared during the workshops will be available in our Member Hub afterwards.
Lastly, we will hold a virtual session for all Change Management Institute members and guests later in 2025 when we will share the key conclusions derived from the research.
